Orange smoke the result of ‘malfunction’ at Arcelormittal Dofasco in Hamilton

A thick orange smoke filled the air around the Arcelormittal Dofasco site in Hamilton’s north end Saturday afternoon, sparking concerns among residents and city councillors alike.
The smoke could be seen beginning around 3:21 from several kilometres away.
Arcelormittal Dofasco released a statement that said the “emission” was the result of a “malfunction in the process of blowing oxygen” into a steelmaking furnace.
A pair of city councillors say the incident is raising their concerns about the safety of those in the city and that more needs to be done to protect the air quality in the city.
Councillors Tammy Hwang and Nrinder Nann are now working along with the Ministry of Environmental Conservation and Parks to get industrial site standards up to date and implemented as quickly as possible.
“This is why as elected officials we need to keep on our industrial neighbours so we’re reporting these to the ministry…and have them issue any fines or consequences…we all have to work together on this.” says Hwang.
“Early evidence is pointing to that the particulate that may be part of that orange smoke is connected with cognitive diseases, and we know many of our residents are struggling with these disorders and industry needs to take account.” says Nann.
