Mother of three killed in suspected impaired driving crash

A wife and mother of three from Newmarket has been killed in what police are calling a “tragic and preventable” crash on Highway 404 Friday.

Ontario Provincial Police were called to the highway for a two-vehicle collision just north of Aurora Rd. around 2 a.m.

Both vehicles ended up in the ditch.

Police say speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

A 41-year-old woman driving one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 37-year-old woman from Newmarket has been arrested and faces several charges.

“This is unbelievably frustrating and preventable,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

“If you are going to be drinking or impairing yourself by any means, it is your responsibly and obligation never to drive.”

After appearing in court Friday, police Shanshan Xiz has been charged with impaired driving causing death, driving over 80 mg, dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing death.

Schmidt says the family of the woman who was killed has been notified.

“The family will grieve the loss forever.”
