Mother of murdered son told she’s not a victim

It’s sometimes said that crime hurts all of society. But the legal definition of just who is a victim of crime might surprise you.

It certainly surprised a Hamilton mother whose son was murdered four years ago.
As Scot Urquhart tells us — the Ontario Criminal Injuries Compensation Board doesn’t think that Liz Hoage is a victim — and they’ve said so, in a formal letter.

Late Tuesday, Attorney General Chris Bentley sent out a statement in regard to this story.
He says he is “deeply concerned” and that he has directed ministry officials to look into the matter, and ensure that “the system is working to provide people, with the assistance they need.”
