Mohawk College says it will continue remote learning for most of its courses for the remainder of the winter term.

In an update on the college’s website, President and CEO Ron McKerlie said all required in-person learning will continue but all other learning that was scheduled to return in-person will now be delivered virtually.

Roughly 45 per cent of full-time students will have hybrid classes and 55 per cent will be fully remote.

The decision was made due to the ongoing spread of the Omicron COVID-19 variant. McKerlie says he hopes this will allow students to plan ahead with certainty.

The school’s library and takeout food services will remain open. However, no visitors are allowed on campus.

All other in-person events, both on and off campus, have been cancelled until the end of February.

The David Braley Athletic & Recreation Centre will be closed until further notice, except for approved academic and college-related purposes.

“We remain committed to fully and safely reopening the college as soon as we are able in order to provide students with an opportunity to learn, grow and develop in all aspects of their education and life. Many students have indicated that they would like to return to campus so they can experience in-person extracurricular activities, greater social connections and large events,” stated McKerlie. “Should conditions improve and we are able to safely bring more students on campus, we may introduce optional campus activities for students to experience.”

The college says it will continue to monitor the situation and make a decision about events for the remainder of the semester by the middle of February.
