After years of legal arguments, Canadian journalist Mohammed Fahmy can finally come home. His case gained the attention of the world, and was eventually bolstered by international lawyer Amal Clooney.

Almost two years after his arrest with two Al Jazeera English colleagues on widely denounced terrorism charges, Fahmy has been pardoned by Egypt’s President. Its an abrupt reversal as he’d been given a three-year sentence just last month, after a second trial on multiple terrorism-related offences. Speaking to reporters today Fahmy says he still can’t believe it. “Where are we going to start, I don’t know. We’re going to travel the world, we’re going to celebrate, we’re going to party, and we just really hope that this is…our families have suffered so much since the beginning of this trial, and we’re very happy that President Sisi took this action and released us. I will continue fighting for press freedom.”

In a statement Fahmy’s international lawyer, Amal Clooney, said “It has been a long ordeal, and we are grateful to President Sisi for exercising his power to pardon the two journalists. This is a historic day in Egypt where the government has finally corrected a long-standing injustice, and set two innocent men free.”
