CHCH News got a new look today at the latest collapse at a huge condominium project in Welland, as people in the city keep waiting to hear what caused parts of the condo to cave in.

A video shared by Randy Stitt of the collapse shows parts of the exterior elements of the condo falling in on each other. Stitt also shared a video from just over a week ago of the first collapse all caught by his home security camera.

What caused the collapse is still a mystery. The provincial government is investigating and the construction site is under the control of the Ministry of Labour.

Jack Torta, Welland chief building official says, “the Ministry of Labour has restricted access to, prohibited access to that site for anyone other than persons involved in bracing up the structure of the building.”

Torta says there had been regular inspections before the first collapse and there were no concerns, “this particular building is required to be designed and reviewed by professional engineers and architects and those professionals are required to provide periodic field reviews at every stage of construction, which have been going on since the beginning of this process.”

The $55M condo being built by Evertrust Developments has more than 200 units and is supposed to be ready for occupation next year. The builder says it’s also waiting for word from the Ministry of Labour so they can go onto the site and shore up the damaged areas.  All of the units in the building have been sold.
