Kingston police warn of bank card thefts in food delivery scam

KINGSTON, ONTARIO — Police in Kingston are warning residents about a food delivery scam in which suspects have switched out victims’ bank cards and obtained their PINs.

Police say a co-ordinated scam appears to have involved two suspects – one posing as a food delivery driver and another pretending to be a customer.

They say that in several incidents one of the suspects approached a victim and claimed they were having trouble paying for food delivery because of a card problem.

Police say the suspect gave cash to the victim and asked the victim to use their bank card on the delivery driver’s PIN reader.

Investigators say the victim’s bank card was then switched with another card and used to make cash withdrawals, deposit bad cheques and make retail purchases.

Police say people should never give their bank card or PIN to another person, or enter their PIN into a payment terminal when they are unsure who is operating it.
