Meta to remove all news for Canadian users off its platforms ‘within weeks’

Meta has announced it will be officially ending all access to news sources for users of its platforms within the coming weeks.
The parent company of both Facebook and Instagram says that it will be removing all news for Canadian users off its platforms over the coming weeks.
Meta has been running a test that limits news access for up to five percent of users. This announcement marks the complete adaptation of this new policy and a total removal of all news content.

What this entails is that links to news articles and other content posted by Canadian news providers will no longer be accessible to anyone accessing the platforms in Canada.
Meta says the move is in response to the Liberal government’s Online News Act that was passed earlier this summer as the act requires tech giants to compensate Canadian news outlets for any content that is shared or repurposed on their platforms.
