McMaster University student tests negative for coronavirus

McMaster University is back to normal operations Monday after test results for one of its students came back negative for coronavirus.
The undergraduate student, who lives outside of Hamilton, sought medical attention after showing flu-like symptoms following a trip to Italy during reading week in mid-February.
They were in self-isolation while awaiting test results for the virus, known as COVID-19.
McMaster University said the student notified officials that their results came back negative Monday morning.
“It is such good news for our student,” said Roger Couldrey vice-president, Administration, and chair of the university’s crisis management team in a news release. “But the virus continues to be a worldwide concern and the crisis team will continue to meet to ensure that McMaster is prepared and shares information and resources with our community.”
The university implemented extra cleaning measures “in an abundance of caution” after learning the student was undergoing testing and had been on campus in the Burke Science Building last Tuesday.
On Sunday, many students voiced concerns about the possibility of a case of the virus being so close to home.
University officials say new posters with reminders about washing your hands frequently for a minimum of 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face and sneezing into your elbow have been placed in washrooms across the campus. It also reminds students to stay home if they are feeling ill.
Officials say proper handwashing is still the best way to protect yourself from viruses, including COVID-19.
