Marineland beluga Jellybean reported to have died suddenly in Spain

A third beluga from Niagara Falls’ Marineland was reported to have died Friday, this time in Spain.

The Spanish aquarium Oceanografic Valencia says Jelly Bean died suddenly on Friday, and another beluga named Cleopatra late last month.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jellybean. Our thoughts are with the people who cared for her — the staff and caretakers who knew her daily, and everyone who followed her story,” said a Marineland spokesperson in a statement to CHCH News. “The circumstances of her death are not known to us at this time.”

The UK-based animal welfare conservation charity Marine Connection said in a post on X Friday morning that a necropsy will be carried out.

Her death adds to a series of losses following the relocation of belugas from Marineland Canada.

Two belugas from Marineland, Rain and Peekachu, and a resident beluga at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium died within weeks of their move.

The closed tourist attraction moved all 30 of its belugas and four dolphins to five aquariums in Chicago, San Antonio, San Diego, Atlanta and Valencia in Spain.
