Canada is calling for an international, co-ordinated response against what it calls the appalling use of force in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev where 25 people were killed and hundreds injured in yesterday’s riots, which have erupted again this morning.
Foreign affairs minister John Baird says Ottawa will consider all options including targeted sanctions against Ukraine. Some of the protesters have taken shelter in the Canadian embassy in Kiev.
There are more than a million people of Ukrainian descent living in Canada.
Explosions are taking place again this morning as fireworks are being thrown and large fires have broken out in Independence Square.
That’s sparked a number of rallies around the world – including one outside the Ukrainian consulate in Toronto.
