Just south of the Grand River on Highway 6, Ontario Provincial Police could be seen searching through the tree-line after a body was discovered in the area.

OPP Sgt. Ed Sanchuk says the remains were found around 6 p.m. Thursday evening, and are believed to be connected to an ongoing homicide investigation in Simcoe.

Earlier this month, the body of 71-year-old Barbara Morgan was discovered in her home on Head Street South.

In the days since, there’s been mounting concern for Barbara’s downstairs tenant, Robert Sykes, who remains unaccounted for. Police say they believe he may be a second victim.

On Oct. 10, Barbara’s son, 45-year-old Justin Morgan, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection to his mother’s death.

Police have not confirmed whether the remains discovered in Caledonia are those of Robert Sykes. The Ontario Forensic Pathology Service will be conducting a postmortem examination to confirm an identity and cause of death.

Investigators with the OPP are appealing to the public for any relevant information.

Anyone who was in the area on Oct. 5 between 10:30 p.m. and 12 a.m. are asked to contact police if they saw any suspicious activity. Police say that even details that seem minor or unrelated may prove to be important.

Motorists with dashcams are asked to check the footage and contact Norfolk County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 with any information that may assist investigators.

Residents in the area can expect to see a police presence as the investigation continues.

Should a member of the public have a tip and wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
