The City of Hamilton took part in a project that is the first of its kind across the country. The project called “A Point in Time” surveyed 504 people experiencing homelessness.

The survey found that 28% are females and 72% are males.

38% of those surveyed reported having a chronic health condition, which is two times higher than the overall Canadian population.

40% of homeless people are between the ages of 31-49.

The highest length of time people are homeless for is less than a year, followed by two years and then five years.

28% of homeless people reported having Aboriginal ancestry.

77% of people do not have enough money to meet their housing needs.

138 people surveyed reported having severe issues and conditions that impact their housing stability.

The count supports a national campaign led by the Canadian Alliance to End Homelessness to house 20,000 of Canada’s most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness by July 1, 2018.

There will be more updates coming.
