Hamilton police are investigating a shooting on Hess Street South early Friday morning, which left one man with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Officers say they received reports at around 4 a.m. of a shooting at 95 Hess St. South.

They say when they arrived they found a 38-year-old man suffering from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds and was transported to hospital. He is expected to survive.

Investigators say they found a longarm gun nearby, which they believe was used in the incident.

According to police, the man was shot inside the apartment building on one of the upper floors.

They say the suspect allegedly left the area on foot and describe them as a man with light skin, a medium build and was wearing a grey shirt with a white logo on it, black boxer shorts and white socks.

“We’re waiting for forensics to process everything. We did have a canine article search ongoing about an hour ago — the suspect is still at large,” said Hamilton police Const. Trevor McKenna. “We believe this is a targeted incident and anyone with information can contact police.”

The apartment building where the shooting took place is a part of city housing which provides various supports for its tenants.

One resident of the apartment building that CHCH News spoke to off camera says he heard loud noises this morning. Meanwhile, two other people we spoke to say they’re not surprised to hear that there was a shooting in this apartment building.

“I wasn’t surprised. Why do they have security guards here if people just bring in guns,” said a resident of the building.

“There’s a lot of illegal activity going on here. And the security detail that they pay big bucks to help secure the building, I don’t think they’re qualified to do the thing,” said another resident.

“These buildings do have a lot of drug activity. There’s a lot of dealers and people that do use. I’ve had issues where I’ve told security about things going on and they just don’t care,” said another building resident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 905-546-4725.
