Parents warn their children to “never talk to strangers.” And as school is about to start, Hamilton Police are looking to tweak that message. It is no longer that “stranger danger” theory, it is about recognizing predator danger signs and unusual behavior that should set off a red flag. That is why police are bringing awareness to the phrase “tricky person”.

According to Statistics Canada, only 12% of offenses against children are committed by a stranger. 44% involve an acquaintance and 38% involve a family member. Just last month, John Leek, a former principal and teacher for school boards in Hamilton, Peel and Durham was sentenced to four year in custody, for ten counts of indecent assault that took place in the 70’s.

This new act also wants to make sure that if a child feels threatened or concerned, they are comfortable talking about it with their guardians. With online crime on the rise, Hamilton Police are urging parents to encourage their children to practice listening to their gut when confronted by “tricky” behaviour when on their computers or phones.
