Hamilton police arrest three people after shots fired near Gage Park

Hamilton police have arrested three people after shots were fired Monday night near Gage Park.

Officers responded to the area of Gage Avenue South and Lawrence Road around 11 p.m. Monday after witnesses reported hearing shots fired and seeing a group of people fleeing the area.

Jennifer Kowalyshen lives near where the shooting occurred. She says that just before coming home last night, she saw two men run from the scene before police arrived and arrested one of them.

“Right down the sidewalk, seemed to be a bit of a panic. I pulled into the house, didn’t think much of it and then within five minutes there was twenty cop cars here,” said Kowalyshen.

“I mean the parks right here, its pretty quiet at night usually though … there isn’t a ton of activity going on. We’ve been here for five years and this is scariest thing that’s happened.”

Kowalyshen says she saw officers handcuff a man across the road on Gage Avenue South as two other men ran.

Police say three people are currently under arrest and that officers located a firearm during a search after the arrest.

One of the suspects suffered a minor injury during the arrest, according to officers.

Hamilton police have yet to comment on what led to the shooting. The scene adjacent to Gage Park was taped off until just before 3 a.m. as investigators continued to canvass the area.

As of Tuesday morning, the scene was cleared with the exception of a few police cruisers.

There is no word yet on any charges laid in connection with the incident.

This is the latest in a string of violent incidents in the city lately and comes on the heels of Hamilton police’s latest statistical update on crime.

They say that despite what seems to be a recent uptick in incidents, gun crime is actually down 24 per cent when compared to the same time last year.

Some living in the Delta neighbourhood say that they are seeing the difference.

The investigation into this latest shooting is ongoing and residents in the area are asked to review their surveillance cameras and vehicle dash camera footage between the hours of 10:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on Monday for any suspicious activity.
