Hamilton officer convicted

A Hamilton police officer could face jail time after being convicted today of fabricating evidence and lying to a Justice of the Peace. The case dates back to 2012 when Constable Robert Hansen was a member of the guns and gangs unit.
The convictions are in connection with a drug bust where Hansen fabricated evidence in an attempt to obtain a search warrant of a drug dealer’s home. Hansen said that he heard that there was a gun used in a previous shooting in Hamilton hidden in the dealer’s home. That was a lie. In reality, Hansen had been texting an informant who was to ‘set up’ the dealer by planting a gun in his home.
Hansen mislead the Justice of the Peace by leaving out key information and made false and or misleading statements in his request for the search warrant. The judge found it extremely troublesome that despite his informant wanting to back out, Hansen had no issues encouraging him to complete his mission of fabricating evidence, a serious crime.
The 41 year old, 16 year veteran was a Detective Constable with the Hamilton police guns and weapons enforcement unit when he was charged in 2012. While suspended for almost four years, Hansen has been collecting hefty paycheques every since. At the time of his arrest he pulled in just under $110 000. Since then, despite no overtime and performance bonuses, Hansen has made almost $300 000 by not working.
He’s one of about 12 Hamilton officers receiving the same benefit, a benefit city council wants abolished.
