The City of Hamilton is being hailed as Canada’s affordable “anchor city.” According to a report by Colliers International, Hamilton has become an enticing destination for various industries and businesses. As Kate Carnegie reports, while Hamilton is still known as “steel town,” its image is changing. Hamilton has become a go to place to live and work.

“We have the most diversified economy in the country. There are employment opportunities across many sectors and more and more people are starting to realize that” says Jason Thorne from Hamilton Economic Development.

Made For You By Madeleine is a bakery on King William Street. It’s coming up on it’s first year anniversary. Owner Joy Jones was born and raised in Toronto. When she moved to Hamilton she realized it’s more feasible to open up a business here. “I think that Toronto is such a big city. And it’s the obvious answer, things are so expensive there and the overhead and starting up is very difficult there. Hamilton seemed more accessible in terms of starting out and having a chance at it. I’m very surprised at how friendly the other business owners are and the type of community there is around that…so that was the biggest surprise I didn’t anticipate.”

A less expensive place to open a business or buy a house, combined with a growing downtown core and a new operational GO station this summer, puts Hamilton on the map for companies looking to expand or rebuild.

Not to mention commute times are half that of Toronto. “Improving transportation is going to be absolutely vital to the city continuing the growth the way that it’s on” says Jason Thorne.
