The Town of Grimsby is celebrating a major upgrade to one of its busiest community spaces.

Since breaking ground in May 2024, the Peach King Centre officially opened its expanded doors today, giving residents a first look at what’s new.

After a year and a half and a $36 million budget, Grimsby officially cut the ribbon on the expanded Major Refrigeration Peach King Centre — inviting the community inside to see what’s new.

Big, bright and built for just about everyone, the upgraded centre now features a double gymnasium, a walking track, multi-use rooms, a fitness studio and major upgrades throughout.

Officials say it’s about creating a space where the community can connect.

“This is a community centre that’s gonna be able to fulfill the needs in a multi-sport facility, a multi-activity facility. And it’s just really exciting to have it here in Grimsby,” said Grimsby Mayor Jeff Jordan.

Whether you’re here to shoot hoops, hit the gym or just get those steps in without worrying about the weather, this place has you covered.

And judging by the turnout today, Grimsby was more than ready for this upgrade.

The grand opening included a community open house, giving residents a chance to explore the new spaces firsthand.

For many, the revamped centre represents a long-awaited boost for local recreation.

“We definitely needed more space in terms of facilities for kids and different programs, so it looks impressive as of now,” said Gopinath Nair, local resident.

One town official says the centre is really the heart of Grimsby because the community was involved through surveys.

“The design process, many of them were involved in giving us their feedback, making sure we have the specifications they needed to deliver the programs and services they wanna bring here, and now of course actually being present and starting to deliver them,” said Sarah Sweeney, Grimsby’s director of community services.

From fitness to fun, the Peach King Centre’s glow-up is officially complete, and Grimsby residents are ready to put it to work.
