The third Monday of each February marks Family Day in Ontario — a holiday where most of the province gets to stay home from work and school for a chance to spend time with loved ones.
Whether you want to stay indoors or brave the weather and get outside, there are a number of events and activities happening around the area.
Over on Mount Hope, the Canadian War Plane Heritage Museum is offering a unique space-themed day.
The museum’s special theme event features a chance to learn about astronomy, space exploration and other technology Canada utilizes in space — like satellites.
If you’re looking to get outside, there are lots of opportunities to get out on the ice. In Hamilton, residents can skate for free at all city arenas between 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
That same offer is being put on in a few other towns.
In Welland, the public is invited to come skate for free at the Welland Main Arena between 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Those living in Beamsville can visit the Fleming Centre starting at noon.
In Grimsby, the Peach King Centre will be offering a free public skate from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Several businesses will be closed for the holiday, including banks, libraries, and most malls and grocery stores.
Buses will be operating on a Sunday schedule, garbage pick-up will be delayed by a day for most places, and it’s an off-peak day for electricity rates.
