The federal government has announced new electric vehicle policies, and one of those is the reintroduction of a rebate program which could help cover the cost of your purchase.

Launching on Feb. 16, the rebate program is being restored with $2.3 billion to help Canadians cover the cost of a new EV.

Prime Minister Mark Carney says the new credit system is supposed to benefit automakers that produce vehicles in Canada.

$1.5 billion has also been set aside for EV infrastructure, such as charging stations.

The program will offer $5,000 towards the cost of a fully electric vehicle and $2,500 towards plug-in hybrids which cost less than $50,000.
