Environment Canada upgrades Hamilton, Niagara snowfall warning from yellow to orange

Environment Canada has upgraded its snowfall warning from yellow to orange for the Hamilton and Niagara regions after significant snowfall Thursday.

The weather agency’s orange alert system indicates severe weather is likely to cause significant damage, disruption, or health impacts. The impacts are major, widespread and/or may last a few days.

Orange alerts are uncommon.

The region can expect snowfall amounts of 20 to 35 centimetres, reduced visibility at times in heavy snow and local blowing snow.

Environment Canada’s website says a low pressure system will continue to bring significant snowfall to much of southern Ontario. Very cold wind chills Thursday morning will add to the adverse weather conditions.

Travel will be hazardous and there may be a significant impact on rush hour traffic. Allow extra time for travel. Non-essential travel should be avoided.
