Fire crews responded to an apartment building in Hamilton Thursday night for a fire that broke out on the second floor.

Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Shawn De Jager says the fire happened at a building on Park Street South around 11 p.m.

Firefighters found one person suffering from smoke inhalation in the hallway next to the unit affected by fire.

Paramedics assessed the person at the scene before taking them to the hospital. There were no other injuries reported.

Crews were able to knock down the fire in the bedroom of the unit and two cats were also saved and placed in the care of Animal Control.

The total cost of damage is estimated to be $100,000 and crews suspect the fire to have been caused by the careless disposal of smoking material.
