Friends and family got together in Dundas today to celebrate a remarkable achievement. They were honouring a local man who reached his 100th birthday. But they were also remembering the many Canadians from a different generation whose sacrifices made Canada the country it is today.

Leo was born in Hamilton and lived much of his life in Dundas. He’s well known in the community as a hockey player when he was younger and lately as the man who gives out candy to everyone he meets.

But some of his memories focus on the 1940s and the Second World War when he was an RCAF aircraft technician who landed in France shortly after D-Day, maintaining the fighter planes that helped push back the Germans in France, Holland, and then Germany.

Leo’s family says it’s important to remember the sacrifices made by people like him. But after living through it to 100, Leo feels someone up there has been looking after him.
