The Hamilton Coroner’s Office has set Aug. 18, at 9:30 a.m. as the date and time for the inquest into the death of 26-year-old Zakery Rogers.

Rogers died Jan. 31, 2021, after being found without vital signs in his cell. Officials say he was resuscitated in hospital and discharged, but ultimately died at the jail.

His death happened after being transferred from the Hamilton-Wentworth Detention Centre.

Because of those circumstances, a coroner’s inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest is expected to last five days, and investigators will hear from around 11 witnesses.

Roger’s family members said he had struggled with mental health issues, and was not given the proper support and professional help from the prison.

His family held a vigil for Rogers last January outside the Barton Street Jail in Hamilton.
