Ontario’s top police watchdog is investigating after a man was killed in a police-involved shooting in Niagara Falls Wednesday morning.

It happened around 11:15 a.m. near the Ramada by Wyndham hotel on Stanley Avenue near Peer Street.

Officials say the shooting involved a Toronto Police Service member who is a part of Ontario Provincial Police’s repeat offender parole enforcement unit. Niagara police only assisted in the response to the shooting.

Niagara EMS told CHCH News that they transported one person to hospital in life-threatening condition. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) confirmed the man has died.

Police are asking people to avoid the area between Stanley Avenue, Robinson Street, Allendale Avenue and Peer Lane.

The SIU is currently at the scene and is expected to speak to the media later this afternoon.

Niagara police say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
