Safety concerns are rising after two ice cream truck drivers in Oakville are charged for allegedly failing to pass safety inspections by the Halton police.

The first arrest was made on July 3 when officers stopped a truck at Dundas St. West and Tremaine Rd. North due to the driver not wearing a seatbelt.

Halton police Const. Marc Taraso said that the seat belt had been removed from the vehicle entirely.

Further inspection showed that the truck weighed 5,500 kilograms, meaning it was overweight on registered gross weight. The vehicle also allegedly was missing commercial vehicle operator’s registration, had no pre-trip inspection, no inspection schedule, an expired insurance card and had the plates removed.

Both the driver and company have been charged.

A second incident happened last Thursday in the area of Bronte Rd. and Dundas St. Const. Marc Taraso says that the vehicle was allegedly overweight on registered gross weight, had no commercial vehicle operator’s registration, no pre-trip inspection, no annual inspection, an inoperative parking brake and around seven inches of steering wheel free play.

The driver of the second vehicle is also facing charges.

Const. Taraso emphasized that “CMVs that drive in our residential neighbourhoods near children are especially a concern to us”.
