Barton Tiffany shelter opens with 40 cabins for encampment residents

CHCH news has the exclusive look at the Temporary Barton Tiffany Shelter in Hamilton today as part of an open house.
The project is a collaboration between the city and the good shepherd to house people living in encampments. There have been multiple delays in getting the project completed but today the city says the first group of people are moved in.
The shelter has 40 double cabins, trailers for washrooms, showers and laundry, common buildings for residents and staff and 24/7 on-site support, including Good Shepherd staff and third-party security.
“The Barton-Tiffany temporary outdoor shelter site will offer housing-focused supports and services in an environment that is designed to meet the unique needs of people currently surviving in encampments,” Katherine Kalinowski, Chief Operating Officer, Good Shepherd Centres Hamilton.
Shelter residents will have access to case management, including health and mental health care, addiction support, assistance with transitioning to permanent housing and meals and snacks.
The units are projected to expand the City’s emergency shelter system by 80 per cent.
Inspired by the teachings of St. John of God, the Good Shepherd is one of the largest providers of health and human services in Hamilton.
