Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberals are returning to the House of Commons with more power after three byelection wins gave them a majority government.
The Liberals won all three byelections Monday night, resulting in a total 174 seats in the House of Commons.
Danielle Martin, MP for Toronto’s University-Rosedale riding; Doly Begum, MP for Scarborough Southwest; and Tatiana Auguste, MP for Quebec’s Terrebonne riding were last night’s byelection winners.
Carney’s government is the first in Canada’s history to switch from a minority to a majority between elections.
In the coming weeks, the governing party will have significantly more control over the House of Commons once the new MPs get sworn into office. This will reduce the chances of an early election.
The next federal election isn’t required until 2029.
