Members of the federal Liberal Party have voted to support a policy that would restrict social media access to Canadians aged 16 and younger.
The non-binding resolution was passed Saturday morning – the restriction would require social media companies to enforce it.
Quebec MP Rachel Bendayan, who first presented the idea to her caucus, saying that extended social media use can be harmful to the mental health of young Canadians.
Bendayan added that social media companies should be more accountable, restricting children’s access to intentionally addictive technologies.
The Quebec MP said she’s spoken with a large number of young people who support the idea.
Although the resolution establishes party policy, it is non-binding — meaning the government is not legally required to implement a ban.
