Maple Skate Park in Burlington reopened this morning, featuring a new tribute to a former Burlington resident.

The custom designed wedge roll-in was unveiled in front of hundreds of people. The added feature pays tribute to Andrew McKay, remembered as a passionate member and supporter of the park.

Close friends and family shared their stories about Andrew, who passed away in 2013. His family and friends raised more than $10,000 through a Go-Fund-Me campaign. Andrew’s mother Joanne McKay is very thankful for how the community came to her side during a tragic time.

“It has been a tough journey, but one of the biggest things that helped was working with the community and all his friends and feeling so supported.”

“They are really family these kids and all these people that are here today that contributed to it. I think that really helped get through the real darker times, knowing there were all these people that were pulling for us to remember Andrew, because I think one of the biggest fears is that they are going to be forgotten or what they stood for and what they believed in, and what Andrew stood for was important.”

The remainder of the funding was donated by the DeGroote Foundation for Kids and the city of Burlington.

The family hopes the park will continue to be a safe haven for young skaters.
