Hamilton’s auditor general reports that for the first time in years the city has had more recoveries than losses when it comes to fraud and waste.
Almost $502,000 has been recovered since last year’s ‘Fraud and Waste’ report.
The most recent report was released by the Office of the Auditor General and covered from July 1, 2024 to June 30 of this year.
The 2025 Fraud and Waste Annual Report says a fraud hotline set up in 2019 has led to more employees and management teams recognizing and anonymously reporting any problems perceived as wasteful.
The office has received over 706 reports in the last six years and in the past year almost a third of nearly 150 calls to the hotline were substantiated.
“The City takes these findings seriously and is committed to acting on the recommendations, with a particular focus on addressing challenges related to cyber and vendor imposter fraud, construction material usage, contractor performance and conflicts of interest,” read a statement from the City of Hamilton.
