Animal shelters across GTHA report record high intake numbers

Animal shelters all across the GTHA and Niagara areas say they have a lot more animals than normal that are looking for a home, and there could be a couple of reasons why the capacity has increased.

The Humane Society of Greater Niagara (HSGN) says they’ll have no problem finding a home for the puppies, but many other animals in their care won’t be as lucky.

Some animals have been at the humane society for over a year and they say right now is the busiest they’ve ever seen it.

The Burlington Humane Society is also going through the same thing with lots of animals that need a home.

The HSGN says the pandemic could be one of the reasons why so many animals are in care-lots of people adopted during the lockdown, but then changing their minds when they went back to work.

Additionally, the costs associated with owning a pet have also gone up.

“For us to have this many animals, yes COVID-19 could be a factor it could also be inflation, so the cost of everything has gone up. We’ve noticed that as well so that also could kind of play a role,” says Sam Moreau from HSGN.

HSGN says if you do want to adopt, don’t just do it on a whim, take your time, do some research, and even come in and ask some questions.

The HSGN also noted that while adoptions are always nice, they could always use donations, money, cat and dog food and even cleaning supplies and blankets.
