Alcohol at the corner store

A petition to allow the sale of beer and wine at Ontario convenience stores was debated at Queen’s Park Wednesday.

More than 112,000 signatures were collected, and it’s the the largest single petition ever collected in the province.

The Ontario Convenience Store Association is behind the petition, saying the province’s current alcohol retailing system needs to be updated to fit current demands.

People in rural and cottage regions are able to buy some alcohol at LCBO agency stores, which also sell food and and snacks, but the same rules do not apply for corner stores.

The McGuinty Liberals appear to be unwilling to open this debate.
