Politicians touring Dufferin mega-quarry site
A group of provincial and federal politicians is touring the proposed mega quarry site in Dufferin County, northwest of Shelburne, ON.
If approved, it would be the biggest quarry ever in Canada. It would be deeper than the Niagara Gorge and would devour about 920 hectares of some of the best remaining agricultural land in Ontario.
Area residents opposed to the project say the mega quarry puts the water supply of more than a million people at risk.
As well as touring the area, the politicians will meet with local organizations.
The NDP is calling for a thorough environmental assessment — a call echoed by Conservative MP David Tilson whose riding encompasses the proposed site.
