The City of Burlington will close a section of King Road for the annual passage of the endangered Jefferson salamanders during their breeding migration.

Road closures will be in effect starting Thursday, March 16, from the base of the Niagara Escarpment to Mountain Brow Rd.

The city says it will be closed so that the salamanders can cross the road safely.

Local traffic between the affected roads and the escarpment will be maintained.

King Road will reopen on April 12, once the salamanders are expected to finish their annual crossing.

Since 2012, the city has closed the same section for the salamanders to cross.

Salamanders are a nationally and provincially protected endangered species.
