Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza stops functioning as battle rages around it

Conditions inside Gaza’s largest hospital are being described by its director as “catastrophic.”

Essential units have collapsed and operating rooms are completely out of service, as thousands of patients and staff are trapped inside.

With the supply of oxygen depleted and fuel drying up, staff are desperately trying to keep dozens of premature babies alive with makeshift means – but some are already dead.

The World Health Organization warns Gaza’s biggest hospital – Al-Shifa – is nearly a cemetery, with bodies piling up inside and outside, as fighting between Israel and Hamas rages.
