Oceanarium in Spain reports death of Marineland dolphin Echo

Oceanografic Valencia, an oceanarium in Spain, says that a dolphin that was recently transported there from Marineland has died.

The park said in a Facebook post Thursday morning that Echo, a Black Sea bottlenose dolphin in her late 20s, arrived at the park late last month with severe vision problems and other medical issues requiring specialized care.

Park staff say that Echo had respiratory problems Wednesday, and her condition deteriorated rapidly despite efforts from veterinary and animal care teams.

Echo, along with three other dolphins and two belugas, were sent to Oceanografic on Aug. 26, from the shuttered Niagara Falls tourist attraction.

One of those belugas, Jelly Bean, died last week.

Four belugas and one dolphin have now died since Marineland shipped out 30 belugas and four dolphins to five different parks over the summer.

Oceanografic is conducting necropsies on both animals along with an examination by pathology experts at CEU Cardenal Herrera University to try to understand the cause of death.

Three of those belugas died at Shedd Aquarium in Chicago along with one of the park’s resident belugas.
