A McMaster University professor wants Omar Khadr in his classroom. The professor has asked the school to guarantee the former Guantanamo Bay prisoner a spot at the university.

But, not everyone believes Khadr’s criminal background should give him special status.

McMaster University Professor David Clark says Omar Khadr is a victim. He says Khadr was robbed of his childhood – forced to endure terrible indignities. Clark has written to the university’s president asking that he hold a spot for Khadr to study at the Hamilton campus. “This is a man that endured an enormous amount and was in effect compelled under duress to concede to a plea deal. He’s now finally been repatriated to Canada. He’s publically asked Canadians to be given a chance. I think one way in which we can give this man a chance is to offer him a place in a good public university like McMaster.”

But journalist David Menzies does not agree. “I am appalled but not surprised. There seems to be this incredible…slobbering love affair – especially for those on the far left – for our home grown convicted Islamist terrorist.”

He questions why Mr. Clark has singled out this convicted killer for special treatment. “If professor Clark at McMaster is so willing to to forgive and forget and is all about second chances – than why doesn’t he write an open letter to the dean proposing that somehow we get Paul Bernardo out on day passes and give him a free education.”

“That’s such an unfair comparison. I don’t know where the comparison would go…where it would come from. Except of course it would continue to villify Khadr, associating him with a convicted sociopath.” says Professor Clark.

A spokesperson for McMaster University says professors are allowed to mentor anyone on their own time. As for giving Omar Khadr special consideration, he said the school has an “open application process” and that it is not their practice to hold spots for anyone
