As we first told you on Thursday night, the City of Hamilton has gone to the courts over delays in the construction of Tim Hortons Field.
On Friday, the city is insisting that this is just a step in the process as they work on a settlement for the yet to be completed stadium.
Even before the Ticats played at Tim Hortons Field, it already had a reputation for delays.
The stadium was supposed to be ready in June of 2014, it partially opened in September of that year and didn’t officially open until May 2015 and it still isn’t finished.
Beyond the city manager, no one else from the city was talking about the project but in the past two years, this is what we heard from city officials about the deadlines that kept being missed.
While negotiations continue, the city is taking legal action.
Lawyer Brent Marshall says filing the notice of action was the next logiocal step for the city in this process.
The city manager Chris Murray says the goal is for the stadium to be 100% finished by the time the Ticats season starts but he won’t talk about what could happen if that deadline isn’t met.
Murray does seem confident that the continuing talks with all of the parties involved at the table will keep this case out of court.
CHCH tried to speak to the other parties at the table on Friday but they would only agree to issuing statements.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats statement says it part —
“This notice is a routine court document that preserves the legal rights of the Tiger-Cats and we will not be providing further details at this time to allow discussions between the parties to proceed.”
The President and CEO of Infrastructure Ontario said —
“We have been working extremely hard on behalf of the province and the owners to find a positive path forward with the Bouygues-led construction consortium.”
“As discussions are currently ongoing, we cannot comment on the specifics involved.”
