Ontario reports 945 COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths as data issues continue

Ontario reported 945 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday but the Health Ministry says ongoing data issues at Toronto Public Health means case counts are under-reported.

As part of Toronto Public Health’s (TPH) migration to CCM, TPH’s case counts are under-reported today, resulting in an underestimate of the daily counts.

The number comes as the province completed 68,812 tests. The reported positivity rate, which takes into account the date tests were completed, is 2.3 per cent.

Another 1,344 cases of the virus that have been marked as resolved.

Here are the COVID-19 numbers for our region

Hamilton

• 9,634 total cases — up four from Wednesday
• 8,873  resolved cases
• 351 active cases
• 272 deaths — up one from Wednesday

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board has three confirmed cases of COVID-19. The cases are all students and are in Westdale Secondary, Earl Kitchener Elementary and Dundas Valley Secondary schools. An e-learning student has also tested positive.

Halton

• 8,912 total cases — up 37 from Wednesday
• 8,330 resolved cases
• 403 active cases
• 179 deaths — up two from Wednesday

Niagara

• 8,273 total cases — up 21 from Wednesday
• 7,408 resolved cases
• 508 active cases
• 357 deaths — up four from Wednesday
• 7,556 vaccine doses given

Brant

• 1,384 total cases — up one from Wednesday
• 1,355 resolved cases
• 17 active cases
• 12 deaths
• 3,035 vaccine doses given, 450 people fully vaccinated

Haldimand-Norfolk

• 1,377 total cases — up two from Wednesday
• 1,290 resolved cases
• 44 active cases
• 38 deaths

The Grand Erie District School Board says there is one confirmed case of COVID-19 at Seneca Central Public School. The board says there are no close contacts within the school  as the person was not in the building during the period of communicability.

Across the province, there were 18 more deaths reported, bringing the death toll to 6,614 people.

There are 236 confirmed cases of the U.K. variant of the virus and three cases of the South African variant.

The number of patients in hospital has dropped to 883. There are 299 in intensive care and 211 on ventilators.

COVID-19 vaccinations

There were 14,717 vaccine doses administered on Wednesday, bringing the total number of doses given to 426,836.

According to the province, 136,988 people have received both required doses of COVID-19 vaccines and are fully vaccinated.
