Burlington to introduce free sport equipment lockers in parks

The City of Burlington has partnered with an on-demand sharing platform to install free sport equipment lockers in parks in the coming weeks.

The storage spaces by Equip Sport will allow residents to borrow equipment such as basketballs and soccer balls at no cost.

Nineteen parks and one parkette across Burlington will feature the lockers.

Funded by Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities, in partnership with the City of Burlington and Equip Sport, the program will help to “remove financial and access barriers that can prevent children, youth and families from participating in sport,” reads a statement from the City.

“By placing free equipment directly in neighbourhood parks, residents can enjoy spontaneous opportunities for play and be more active and connect with others close to home,” the statement added.

The lockers are secure, easy to use and designed to support residents of all ages and abilities. Equipment can be borrowed and returned for others to benefit from them.

Residents can access the lockers through the free Equip Sport mobile app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

“Launching in Burlington is a proud moment for us. Burlington joins a growing movement of cities deploying a new type of infrastructure, making sport equipment available wherever people hang out, play, and connect,” said Vincent Borel, CEO, Equip Sport.

There is no cost to download or use the app. Users must be 16 years or older to create an account and borrow equipment. Kids younger than 16 can use a family account.
