A cornerstone of the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s Canadian Collection is returning home.

The Phantom Hunter, painted by Hamilton’s own William Blair Bruce in 1888, has been in Switzerland for over a year.

It was part of an exhibition at a museum in Kunstmuseum, Basel on ghost culture in the 19th century.

Bruce was one of Canada’s first impressionists, and one of the first Canadian artists to have a successful international career.

It is unknown when The Phantom Hunter will be back on the walls at the Art Gallery of Hamilton.
