Funeral Monday for Hamilton soldier who died while deployed in Latvia

Funeral arrangements have been made to honour a Canadian Armed Forces member from Hamilton who died while deployed to Latvia, with services on Sunday and Monday.

In an email to CHCH News, the father of Gunner Sebastian Christian Halmagean shared the funeral information.

Halmagean’s family will receive friends and well wishers at the Dodsworth & Brown Funeral Home in Ancaster Sunday between 2 and 4 p.m., and between 6 and 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be held the following morning at 11 a.m., followed by his burial at Woodland Cemetery in The Field of Honour in Burlington.

Those attending the visitation and service are asked to kindly keep condolences brief, in consideration of the family.

Halmagean was deployed on Operation REASSURANCE and employed by the Canadian-led NATO Multinational Brigade Latvia.

The Hamiltonian was posted to the 4th Artillery Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery, part of 6 Canadian Combat Support Brigade – based at 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B.

He served in the Canadian Armed Forces for almost three years. His stationing in Latvia was his first overseas deployment.

Halmagean died at Camp Labrie on Ceri Military Base on Jan. 29, and his body was returned to Canadian soil Tuesday and received by his family.

The Canadian military says his death is currently under investigation by the Canadian Forces Military Police, with support from Latvian State Police. There is no additional information regarding his death at this time.
