Sir Wilfrid Laurier Recreation Centre in Hamilton is officially re-opened after being closed for renovations for nearly two years.

Originally slated to re-open sometime in the fall, city officials say that the renovations were completed ahead of schedule. The recreation centre will be open to the public beginning Wednesday, and an official grand re-opening event is scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

Visitors can expect to see major changes to the building – including a new double gymnasium, upgraded accessibility features, a new multi-purpose room and more parking spaces.

“Sports and recreation activities for Hamiltonians, like those offered at the newly renovated Wilfrid Laurier Recreation Centre are at the heart of strong, healthy neighbourhoods,” Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath said in a statement.

The city is encouraging community members to attend the re-opening celebration on Saturday, June 21 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
