More police on Toronto streets

Toronto Police Services will be increasing its presence in areas prone to crime for the remainder of the summer, adding hundreds of boots on the ground.

The increase will see an additional 456 officers in the downtown core during the Caribbean Carnival, formerly Caribana, plus another 350 for the August 4 parade.

After the parade, an addition of as many as 329 officers will be on the streets on any given day between August 6 to September 9.

The increase in staff will be paid through “compulsory overtime.”

Officials in Toronto are looking at ways to try and curb the recent spike in violence in the the city. This past week, Rob Ford met with Dalton McGuinty and Stephen Harper separately to seek increased funding for policing.
