Horwath: no NDPers to defect to Liberals

NDP leader Andrea Horwath says her party isn’t looking to force an election any time soon.

Meeting in Toronto with her new caucus for the first time since last week’s election, Horwath says she’s hoping premier Dalton McGuinty understands he will have to govern differently under the new legislative reality.

She says despite a lack of co-operation from the Liberals so far, she wants to see how the parties behave when the legislature resumes.

“We’ll give them as much time as it takes to start creating some change for the people, and that’s been our focus. I think people want stability over the next couple of years but I think they also want to see the kind of change where parties are working together to create more jobs.”

Horwath adds she has commitments from all her 17 members that no one will cross the floor to give the Liberals a majority. The party is also declining to nominate any of its members for the role of speaker, because that would mean any vote could end in an even split.
