11 townhouses destroyed in massive fire in Stoney Creek

First Published:

A massive overnight fire has destroyed 11 townhouses in Stoney Creek.

Fire crews were called to a townhouse complex on Edenrock Dr., near Norbrook Dr., at 2:40 a.m. on Monday.

The fire began in the end unit of a block of homes.

When crews arrived, the home was fully involved and flames were coming out of the roof.

Hamilton Fire Chief Dave Cunliffe says the wind drove the fire toward another block of townhouses with eight units.

Residents in the blocks of homes surrounding the fire were evacuated.

By 6:30 a.m. the fire was extinguished, however crews will be on scene taking care of hot spots.

Eleven units in two different blocks of homes have been heavily damaged by fire.

Because of significant structural damage, including roof and floor collapses, crews weren’t able to get into most units.

“We were able to get in four units and were able to do what we call a primary search, to be able to confirm that there was nobody inside,” said Cunliffe.

He said there were no reports of any civilian or firefighter injuries.

It’s not yet clear how many people were displaced.

The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to help determine the cause of the fire.

Cunliffe says the damage is going to be in the millions.
