Smoking and weight gain
Smokers tend to gain weight in the year after they kick the habit, but researchers say a modest increase is healthier than continuing to smoke.
A study finds the amount of weight smokers gain when they quit is higher than originally thought, between 8 and 11 pounds after 12 months.
Many smokers say weight gain is a reason they don’t quit, but experts say most smokers lose the weight after a few years.
Smoking has been proven to increase the risk of death, while minor weight gain has not.
