HAPPENING NOW:

Bilingualism and hearing

The ability to speak two languages appears to enhance a person’s hearing and attention.

Experts studied the brain activity of nearly 50 teens.

Half spoke both Spanish and English, the other half spoke English only.

Those who spoke two languages had a “fine-tuned” auditory nervous system which helped enhance their attention and working memory.

It’s unclear whether learning a new language later in life would have the same effect.
